Notes: Iowa Heads to Arizona for Westbrook Spring Invitational

THIS WEEK
The University of Iowa women’s golf team heads to Peoria, Arizona, for the Westbrook Spring Invitational from Feb. 26-27. The event will be played at the Westbrook Village Golf Club – Vistas Course with a shotgun start format with 36 holes being contested on Sunday and 18 on Monday.

THE LINEUP
The Hawkeyes will send six golfers to Arizona for the tournament. Iowa’s lineup will include freshman Madison Dabagia, freshman Riley Lewis, freshman Shannyn Vogler, sophomore Paula Miranda and freshman Kaitlyn Hanna. Senior Jordan Amelon will be competing as an individual.

THE FIELD
Iowa will compete against a field of 14 teams that includes: College of Charleston, Denver, Iowa, Kansas, Kansas State, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Penn State, Rutgers, UNLV, and Wisconsin. Four of these schools rank in the top-50 in the Golf Stat rankings, including College of Charleston (36), Denver (44), Nebraska (49), Ohio State (24).

THE COURSE
The Westbrook Village Golf Club has two courses — Vista and Lakes course – located on its property in north Peoria. The course received a top-25 ranking in course conditions, course layout and pace of play, as well as, a top-25 Golfers’ Choice course. The Hawkeyes will be playing on the Vista Course — a venue with a links-style design with challenging elements throughout the 6,248 yards, par-18 layout. The course was designed by Ken Kavanaugh in 1990.

LAST TIME OUT
The Hawkeyes had their best finish of the season, placing fifth out of 18 teams at the Tulane Classic presented by Chad Brownstein on Feb. 12-14. Iowa was in 11th following day one before firing rounds of 299 and 305 to climb the leaderboard.
• Freshman Madison Dabagia led the team, firing a 226 total (77-74-75) to tie for eighth place — the best finish of her Hawkeye career. The Indiana native had 11 birdies during the three-day tournament en route to the best finish by an Iowa player this season.
• Freshman Riley Lewis was the second highest finisher, tying for 27th place with a 231 (80-78-73). Lewis jumped 25 spots on the final day after shooting a one-over par 73.

“MZ” PATCH
The Hawkeyes will don a “MZ” patch on their golf bags for the remainder of the 2023 spring season in support of senior Lea Zeitler. Lea’s mother, Marketa, passed away in late February.

2022 WESTBROOK SPRING INVITE
Paula Miranda paced the Hawkeyes at the 2022 Westbrook Spring Invitational, as she tied for 23rd with a 218 (71-73-74). Miranda is the only player on the current roster who will be returning to Peoria. Iowa finished 14th as a team with an 899 total over 54 holes.

LOOKING AHEAD
Iowa will head to the Sunshine State from March 6-7, traveling to Jacksonville, Florida, for the UNF Collegiate.
