Hawkeyes Start Weekend with a Pair of Top-10 Marks

AUSTIN, Texas — University of Iowa track and field kicked off a full weekend of competition at the Texas Relays and Bobcat Invitational on Thursday with a number of top-10 finishes.

Senior Mariel Bruxvoort and junior Paige Magee led the way for Iowa in the women’s 400-meter hurdle prelims, both qualifying for the finals tomorrow afternoon. Bruxvoort’s career-best mark of 57.18 earned her third place and moved her to sixth in the Hawkeye history books. Magee was right behind, finishing fourth with a season-best time of 57.49.

“We started the weekend off on a positive note,” Director of Track and Field Joey Woody said. “Mar (Bruxvoort) and Paige (Magee) performed at a terrific level today to make the finals of the 400 hurdles. To have two women make the final in a meet of this caliber is very impressive,” Woody added.

The Hawkeyes were active in the field events in Austin, as freshman Mike Stein once again hit a personal best in the men’s javelin. Stein’s throw of 68.01 meters (223’ 1”) claimed fifth place in the event and continues an impressive start to the freshman’s campaign. Freshman Lizzy Korczak followed her debut with a 44.29 meter (145′ 3″) javelin toss — good for tenth overall. He also improved his mark of fourth best in school history. Senior Amanda Howe finished twelfth in a loaded field in the women’s hammer throw, tossing 61.65 meters (202’ 3”).

“Mike (Stein) balled out today,” assistant coach Ray Robinson said. “Lizzy (Korczak) took a good step forward throwing into a strong headwind.”

“Mike continues his strong freshman campaign with another amazing performance and top five throw in Iowa history,” Woody said.

Over at the Bobcat Invitational in San Marcos, Texas, Senior Jamie Kofron led the Hawkeyes in the women’s discus with a mark of 47.34 meters (155’ 4”).

“We have a lot of athletes opening up their outdoor seasons tomorrow and I’m very excited to keep the momentum building at Florida, Texas and Stanford,” Woody added.

The Hawkeyes are back in action on Friday at Texas Relays, Bobcat Invitational and Mike Fanelli Track Classic and the Florida Relays and Stanford Invitational. A full schedule is on the track and field schedule page via hawkeyesports.com.
