McClear Set for U.S. Open Final Qualifying

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – University of Iowa senior Mac McClear is set to compete at U.S. Open final qualifying on June 5 at the Springfield Country Club.

McClear advanced from a field of 9,693 golfers with a victory on May 9 at the local qualifier in Grayslake, Illinois. He is one of 530 competitors vying to join the 156 qualifiers for this year’s U.S. Open.

Designed by Donald Ross in 1922, the Springfield Country Club’s par-72 championship course spans 6,684 yards and has served as a U.S. Open qualifying site since 2010.

Last time out, McClear was a five-under par (211) competing individually at NCAA Regionals in Las Vegas. Prior to that, he strung together consecutive victories at the Hawkeye Invitational and the Big Ten Championships.

McClear shot a season-best 206 (-10) at Finkbine Golf Course for Iowa’s final home event of the season. Then, he was co-medalist at Galloway National Golf Club, posting a three-under par (139) total through 36 holes as third-round play at the conference tournament was cancelled due to weather.

McClear is Iowa’s first two-time Big Ten Champion and the 16th conference golfer to repeat as league medalist. He finished with three collegiate victories on the year, bringing his career medalist total to five, the winningest effort by an Iowa men’s golfer since 1976.

Last weekend, McClear earned 2023 PING All-Midwest honors, his third-straight postseason regional recognition. Twenty-five Division I golfers from around the Midwest were selected for the honor.  McClear was previously named All-Big Ten Second Team for his play this season.

The 2023 U.S. Open will take place June 15-18 at The Los Angeles Country Club.
