University of Iowa volleyball hosts Iowa State on Wednesday for the annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series at 6 p.m. (CT). The Hawkeyes then host the Hawkeye Invitational, featuring Central Michigan on Friday at 6 p.m. (CT), Missouri State on Saturday at 6 p.m. (CT), and Grand Canyon at 2 p.m. (CT)inside Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa.

SCOUTING IOWA STATE

  • Christy Johnson-Lynch enters her 19th season at the helm of the Cyclones.
  • Iowa State recieved votes in the preseason AVCA poll.
  • The squad features 12 returners and three newcomers.
  • OH/RS sophomore Maya Duckworth was named Preseason All-Big 12 following her breakout feshman season.
  • Last season the Cyclones posted 20 wins and made a run to the second run of the NCAA Tournament.
  • The Cyclones have a 5-0 start on the 2023 season.

SCOUTING CENTRAL MICHIGAN

  • Mike Gawlik enters his eighth season at the helm.
  • Central Michigan was picked to finish third in the Mid-American Conference.
  • Setter sophomore Claire Ammeraal was named preseason All-MAC after a successful freshman campagin.
  • Central Michigan returns four of their seven starters.
  • Central Michigan ended the 2022 season 20-12 (12-6 MAC).

SCOUTING MISSOURI STATE

  • Steven McRoberts enters his fourth season at the helm.
  • The Bears return 10 athletes who saw significant action last season.
  • Missouri State finished last season 9-21 overall and 6-12 in conference play.

SCOUTING GRAND CANYON

  • Tim Nollan enters his seventh season at the helm of the Lopes.
  • Grand Canyon was voted to finished second in the WAC from a preseason coaches poll.
  • Setter graduate student Klaire Mitchell and OH sophomore Tatum Parrott were both named to the preseason All-WAC team.
  • Grand Canyon is coming off a 2022 season with an overall record of 18-11, and 10-4 in conference play.

2023 UPDATE

  • Iowa is 4-2 on the season, sweeping the Fryfest Invitational on a three-match win streak over Middle Tennessee State, Kent State, and South Dakota State.
  • With the Hawkeyes’ Fryfest Invitational win, Nataly Moravec was named tournament MVP and Caitlan Buettner and Delaney McSweeney were named to the all-tournament team.
  • At the Sacramento State Invitational, Anna Davis was named to the all-tournament team.
  • The Hawkeyes’ roster includes student-athletes from Colorado (2), Connecticut, Illinois (2), Iowa (6), Nebraska, New York, Texas (2), Virginia, Wisconsin, and New Zealand.
  • The 2023 squad highlights five seniors, three juniors, four sophomores, and six freshmen.
  • Nine student-athletes are new to the Hawkeyes this season, including three transfers and six freshmen.

HAWKEYE TRANSFERS

  • Caitlan Buettner comes to Iowa from Texas State. The 6-2 outside hitter is a fifth year from El Paso, Texas.
  • Maddy Hanson came to the Hawkeyes from Denver. The sophomore middle hitter stands at 6-1 and is originally from San Antonio, Texas.
  • Nataly Moravec joins the squad from Brigham Young. Moravec stands at 6-2 as a sophomore outside hitter. Moravec calls Weston, Connecticut, home.

BEST CONFERENCE IN THE NATION

  • Six Big Ten teams finished the season ranked in the final top 20 AVCA Coaches Poll — No. 5 Wisconsin, No. 8 Ohio State, No. 9 Nebraska, No. 10 Minnesota, No. 11 Penn State, and No. 20 Purdue. 
  • The Big Ten Conference has crowned an NCAA Champion in 10 of the last 17 years and at least one Big Ten team has advanced to the Final Four in seven of the last eight seasons.
  • This season, six teams are ranked within the top 25 — No. 2 Wisconsin, No. 5 Nebraska, No. 7 Minnesota, No. 8 Penn State, No. 14 Ohio State, and No. 16 Purdue.
