IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa track and field swept Big Ten Athlete of the Week honors on Wednesday. Seniors Kalen Walker and Kat Moody earned their second career conference weekly honors. Seniors Mariel Bruxvoort and Mike Stein were recognized for the first time.
Iowa last swept Big Ten weekly awards on Dec. 13, 2023. Moody and Stein are co-winners this week.
Senior Kalen Walker was named men’s track athlete of the week. At the USF Alumni Invite on March 15, Walker set the Iowa program record in the 100-meter dash, racing 10.09 to win the event. Walker, whose previous best was 10.18, topped the previous record by one-hundredth of a second.
Walker’s time leads the nation this year and is faster than any 100-meter time recorded by a Big Ten athlete during the 2023 season.
Senior Mariel Bruxvoort earned women’s track athlete of the week. Bruxvoort won the 400-meter hurdles at the USF Alumni Invite, running 57.49. That time ranks third nationally this season. Bruxvoort also ran the lead leg of the 4×400-meter relay that finished third in Tampa (3:39.57).
Sophomore Mike Stein earned Co-Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week after shattering his own school record in the javelin. The Milford, Iowa, native opened outdoor season with a 79.26-meter javelin throw, good for the second-best mark in the NCAA. Stein threw 75 meters or more on three of his six throws to win at USF. His previous record stood at 75.59 meters.
Senior Kat Moody was named Co-Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week . Moody won the women’s shot put at the USF Alumni Invite with a throw of 16.83 meters (55’ 2.75”).
Iowa returns to action March 29-30. The Hawkeyes will compete at the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Florida, as well as the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, California, and the Mike Fanelli Track Classic in San Francisco.
