Charlie Hoyle enters his sixth season as University of Iowa assistant men’s golf coach. Hoyle helps lead a Hawkeye program that has finished fifth or better at eight of the last ten Big Ten Championships and appeared in 11 of the last 14 NCAA Regionals (ranks third among conference programs).
Hoyle is part of a staff under head coach Tyler Stith that has led Iowa to the top four of the Big Ten Championships five times, advanced to five NCAA Regionals, and totaled three or more top-three tournament finishes in six of nine seasons. Three of Iowa’s five Big Ten medalist performances have been won with Coach Stith at the helm.
This past season, Hoyle helped lead the Hawkeyes to two team championships at the Iowa Fall Classic and the Hawkeye Invitational. Senior Mac McClear was medalist in each of those outings, as well as at the Big Ten Championships, becoming Iowa’s first two-time Big Ten Champion as well as the winningest Hawkeye since 1976 with five collegiate victories. The Hawkeyes tied for fifth as a team at the Big Ten Championships, which were cut short to just 36 holes due to weather concerns during the third round.
Iowa won its 17th team championship at the Hawkeye Invitational in the event’s 29-season history. Other notable outings included a tie for fourth place at the Wake Forest Invitational, where McClear tied for second and senior Ronan Kleu tied for ninth in a loaded field of competition at Pinehurst No. 2. The Hawkeyes also hosted the Calusa Cup, one of the premier events of the 2022 regular season; Iowa welcomed eight ranked programs, including four of the Golfstat top-five ranked teams, to Calusa Pines Golf Club.
McClear advanced as an individual to the NCAA Regional competition in Las Vegas. He earned All-Big Ten Second Team recognition, the third conference postseason honor of his historic Hawkeye career. In the classroom, Iowa was recognized for posting the top Spring and Fall team GPA of 2022 among Hawkeye men’s athletics programs.
In 2022, Hoyle helped coach Iowa to three top-six finishes as well as a number of individual accomplishments. Hawkeyes Mac McClear and Ronan Kleu each earned second team All-Big Ten recognition, as well as bids to compete individually at NCAA Regionals in Norman, Oklahoma. Those two were among four Iowa golfers to combine for nine top-10 finishes on the season, including a strong showing at the Hawkeye Invitational where junior Garrett Tighe and McClear finished second and fifth, respectively. The Hawkeyes placed third at Big Ten Match Play, where they defeated Minnesota (4-1), two-seed Northwestern (3-2), and top-seeded Purdue (tie-breaker) with one loss against Michigan State (4-1). Iowa finished seventh at the Big Ten Championships as a team, where four Hawkeyes placed inside the top 27 on the leaderboard.
In 2021, Hoyle helped lead Iowa to five top-five finishes, including two tournament wins at the Spartan Collegiate at Sea Island and the Hawkeye Invitational. Iowa’s victories marked the first time since the 2014 season, that the program won multiple team titles. Fifth-year senior Alex Schaake and sophomore Mac McClear also combined for three individual championships, the most for the Hawkeyes since the 2013 season. Iowa finished runners-up at both the Big Ten Match Play and the Big Ten Championships, and the qualified for NCAA Regionals. Hoyle helped mentor McClear to a Big Ten Championship and unanimous first-team All-Big Ten honors, as well as helping Schaake earn Big Ten Co-Player of the Year accolades for the second time in Hoyle’s tenure.
In his second season, Hoyle helped direct the Hawkeyes to three top-six finishes, including a third-place finish at the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Classic. Hoyle helped coach Schaake and Gonzalo Leal Montero to five top-25 finishes a piece with 71.6 and 71.9 18-hole stroke averages, respectively. With help from Hoyle, Jake Rowe recorded his career low 18-hole score (70) in the second round of the Puerto Rico Classic. The 2020 season was canceled by Big Ten Conference and NCAA on March 12, due to concerns of coronavirus (COVID-19).
In his first year, Hoyle helped coach Iowa to a national ranking, another NCAA Regionals appearance and five top-five finishes, including the Hawkeye Invitational title with a school shattering record 54-hole score of 809 (-43), topping the previous mark by 24 strokes. Hoyle helped coach Schaake to five top-10 finishes, earning Men’s Big Ten Golfer of the Year and the Les Bolstad award for leading the Big Ten with a 70.81 stroke average, along with being named a unanimous All-Big Ten First Team honoree. Benton Weinberg was named a second-team All-Big Ten selection. Hoyle was also instrumental in Leal Montero’s success, walking with the Hawkeye rookie providing guidance during his rounds throughout the season.
In addition to his extensive work with the Iowa golf program, Hoyle qualified for the U.S. Mid-Amateur in 2023. The same year, Hoyle won the Iowa four-ball championship with partner Tyler Stith and won the Iowa Amateur Championship by 6 shots.
His coaching career began in August of 2011, after being hired as Lander’s men’s and women’s assistant golf coach. While assisting the men’s team, he helped lead the Bearcats to two team wins and recruited and coached six men’s all-conference players, three NCAA PING All-Regional players, two conference freshman of the year, and two NCAA All-Americans.
As the women’s assistant, Hoyle recruited and coached seven women’s all-conference players, two NCAA PING All-Regional players, two conference freshman of the year, and one NCAA All-American. Hoyle also helped guide the women’s team to an impressive nine team wins.
A native of Lancashire, England, Hoyle played at Lander University in South Carolina from 2006-2010, where he recorded three second-place individual finishes and seven team victories. Hoyle was a two-time NCAA PING All-Region selection and a two-time All-Peach Belt selection, while being voted Lander’s Most Valuable Player by his teammates in 2009.
After graduating in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education/exercise studies, he competed professionally, winning 10 events across various mini-tours in the U.S, while also competing in the PGA Tour’s Q-School. Hoyle’s playing career stretched to Europe before returning to the U.S.
