Kevin Johnson is in his first year as a graduate assistant coach with the University of Iowa football program. He assists with the Hawkeye wide receivers.
Johnson joined the Iowa staff after serving as a special teams analyst with the Florida Atlantic football program for two seasons. Johnson was a graduate assistant coach at Arkansas in 2020, where he worked with the offense and special teams.
During his playing career Johnson played quarterback at Richmond (2015-18) and Western Illinois (2019). He earned his first career start at Richmond in 2016, passing for 315 yards in a playoff win over North Carolina A&T. For the season he completed 50-of-76 attempts for 761 yards and three touchdowns. He started six games in 2018, completing 90-of-164 attempts for 1,302 yards and five touchdowns.
Johnson completed his career at Western Illinois in 2019, passing for 379 yards and six touchdowns while playing in four games.
As a prep Johnson was a three-sport athlete at Pace Academy in Atlanta. As a quarterback, he was a four-time All-Region First Team quarterback and four-time Team MVP. Johnson earned first-team all-state accolades as a senior, leading the team to the Elite Eight. He set school records for total passing yards and total touchdown passes. Johnson was also a member of the 4×400 relay unit that earned region and state championships. He was a senior leader of the region championship and Elite Eight finalist basketball squad.
Johnson earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology from Richmond.
He is a native of Atlanta, Georgia, where his father is a high school coach at Pace Academy.
