Omaho, NE – The University of Iowa soccer team fell to Creighton in the championship game of the Creighton Bluejay Classic. Iowa scored the first goal of the game, but Creighton scored two goals in the second half to secure a 2-1 victory.

In the first half of the game Creighton held the offensive advantage as they out shot the Hawkeyes 10-2. Iowa goalkeeper Britta Vogele kept the Bluejays off the board as she stopped three saves in the first 45 minutes.

After intermission Iowa freshman Lindsey Phillips got the Hawkeyes on the board when she beat Creighton goalkeeper Jaimie Thompson to the ball and shot it into an empty net to give Iowa a 1-0 lead.

At the 67:24 mark, Vogele got tangled up with Creighton’s Krystle Campa in the box as both were going for the ball. Vogele was given a red card and ejected from the match, and the Bluejays were awarded a penalty kick. Sophomore Brooke Peterson was brought in the game to replace Vogele and Creighton’s Lulu Quigley converted on the penalty kick to knot the game at one apiece.

With a little more than ten minutes to play, Campa received a pass from Lindsey Martinson in the Iowa box. Martinson beat Iowa’s Peterson to the ball and fired what turned out to be the game-winning goal.

Iowa was out shot 19-8 in the contest. Vogele stopped six shots in the game, while Peterson stopped two shots in the first action of her Hawkeye career. Junior Kitty Montgomery, sophomore Katelyn Quinn and Vogele were named to the all-Tournament team.

Next weekend, Iowa will travel to Lexington, KY, to compete in the Kentucky Invitational. Iowa is summoned to take on Rutgers on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and BYU on Saturday.
