Iowa Announces Recruiting Class

University of Iowa women’s swimming coach Garland O’Keefe hasannounced her 2003 recruiting class. The class cons ists of Emmy Haeger (Hales Corner, WI),Erin Petty (Bettendorf, IA), Robin Samples (Des Moines, IA), Jaclyn Sarna (Lake Geneva,WI), Joyce van Keulen (Leusden, Netherlands), and sophomore transfer Katie Martin.

Haeger won 2003 state titles in the 50-free (24.11), 100-breast (1:05.58), and was amember of the 200-medley relay that set a state record (1:47.38). Haeger is the sister of KatieHaeger, who also swims for Iowa.

Petty holds Bettendorf High School records in the 50 and 100- freestyles, and was amember of record-setting 200 and 400-freestyle relay teams. Petty is this year’s state championin the 50- freestyle (24.42) and 100-freestyle (52.54). Petty also swam the first leg of the 200-free relay at state, helping her team earn a first place finish (1:38.53). Petty was named 2003IHSAU Swimmer of the Year.

Samples hails from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, IA, where she won a state titlein the 50-free and placed fourth in the 100- free her senior year. Samples added the school recordfor the 50 free to her list of accomplishments during her junior year. She was a four-time allstate,all-district, and all-conference team member.

Sarna comes to the hawks from Lake Geneva, WI, with school records in the 50, 100, 200and 500- free, and as a member of the 200 and 400-free relay squads. Her best times include 25.0 in 50-free, 55.8 in 100- free, 1:57.8 in 200-free, and 5:15.9 in 500-free. Sarna was also her team’scaptain and MVP.

Van Keulen, from Leusden, Netherlands, joins junior Lisette Planken, as the secondmember of the team from the Netherlands. Her personal bests are 58.46 in the 100-meter free,2:02.91 in the 200- meter free, 1:05.63 in the 100-meter back, and 2:16.65 in the 200- meter back.

Martin is a transfer from the University of Wisconsin. In high school she was a three-timestate champion in the 100-free, and a two-time state champion in the 50- free. She was also afour-time team MVP, and two-time Iowa Female Swimmer of the Year.
