Klami Qualifies For World Diving Championships

Three divers representing the University of Iowa’s men’s and women’sswimming and diving programs have earned national recognition in recent diving competition.

Nancilea Underwood (Spring, TX) recently placed seventh in the three-meter divingcompetition at the United States Diving Championships in Indianapolis, IN. With herperformance, Underwood qualified for the 2004 Olympic Diving Trials, which will be held nextJune in St. Louis, MO.

Lisette Planken (Amersfoort, Netherlands) and men’s diver Timo Klami (Nodeland, Norway)have qualified for the World Diving Championships, which will be held July 13-20 in Barcelona,Spain. Planken and Klami have each qualified for both the one-and three-meter diving events.Klami qualifed for both events at the Swedish Cup competition, while Planken qualified for theone-meter event at the NCAA Championships and the three-meter event at a recent internationalevent in Rome.

“We’re very proud of all three divers,” said Bob Rydze, Iowa’s men’s and women’s divingcoach. “This continues the progress we made last season. It’s very exciting to coach threeworld-class divers.”

Klami, Planken and Underwood each earned all-America honors while competing at the 2003NCAA Championships. Klami is also the Big Ten champion in the three-meter event. Plankenwill be a senior next year, while Klami and Underwood will be juniors.
