Tostitos Gold Tours Iowa City

Sept. 30, 2003

Week three of the season-long Tostitos sampling tour found the Tostitos brand within the friendly confines of Kinnick Stadium at the University of Iowa.

Showcasing the smash-mouth style of football for which the Big Ten is renowned, the Iowa Hawkeyes’ defense crunched the opposing Arizona State Sun Devils offense, limiting the Sun Devils to only a safety in a 21-2 victory.

Hawkeye hits didn’t provide the only crunching sound on this day as the crowd of more than 70,000 Iowa fans were greeted with a bag of Tostitos Gold on their seat and were seen savoring the great taste of Tostitos Gold throughout the game.

Similar to previous weeks, tailgaters were not only treated to a complimentary bag of Tostitos Gold upon entering the stadium, but most had purchased some variety of Tostitos or other Frito-Lay products for their external tailgate parties.

Within this plethora of Frito-Lay products, Carie Schultheis was spotted “Tailgating with Tostitos Gold!” and was awarded this week’s $1000 prize. Mark Powers from the Frito-Lay Midwest South region spotted Carie less than a football toss from the gates of Kinnick Stadium. Schultheis has been enjoying Iowa Hawkeye tailgating for more than 10 years and is now a much bigger fan of Tostitos Gold.

With the support of the Iowa Athletic Department and the Hawkeye Sports Network, this week’s Tostitos activities were surrounded with numerous media events. After winning $1,000, Schultheis was recognized and interviewed by the Iowa Hawkeye Radio Network. Additionally, Mark Powers from Frito-Lay was on-air to discuss the Tostitos season-long sampling and $1,000 “Spot and Win” promotions. Finally, Steve Horrell, last year’s President of the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl Board and an active “Yellow Jacket”, discussed the current status of the BCS and the prosperous relationship between the Fiesta Bowl, college football and the Tostitos brand.

It is safe to say that fans at the game, and throughout the state of Iowa, could sense the Tostitos presence at Saturday’s game.
