Men and Women Defeat Michigan State

IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa men’s swimming team won by a score of 180.50 to 117.50. The women also defeated Michigan State by a score of 174 to 120.

The Hawkeye women came back to win after being down 16 points after the diving event, Iowa’s two divers Lissete Planken and Nancilea Underwood are both preparing for the upcoming Olympic tryouts. Timo Klami earned a first place spot in the men’s one-meter with a score of 317.85, and also in the three-meter with a score of 368.10.

Some big wins were collected by Jennifer Skolaski in the 500 and 1,000-free and the 200-IM, Joyce VanKeulen in the 200-free Kelly Werner in the 100 and 200-back, Andrea Hemphill in the 200-fly, Christie Hooper in the 100-free, Kristin Eide in the 200-breast and the 100-fly. The team of VanKeulen, Hooper,Abby VanMaaren, and Katie Haeger 400-free relay with a time of 3:29.97. Karen Kelly, Erin Cochran, Katie Martin, and Emmy Haeger placed second with a time of 3:32.66.

The men’s team of Kevin Velleca, Andrei Prada, Jason Snider, and Alex Boyce captured the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:32.21, while Konrad Kazmierczak, Velleca, Prada, and Cam Dye won the 400-free relay. Other wins for the men came from Velleca in the 100-back and 100-free, Mariusz Muras in the 100 and 200-fly, Kazmierczak in the 50-free, Steve Medaglia in the 200-IM, and Andrei Ciurca in the 200-back.

Both teams travel to Madison, WI tomorrow to take on the Badgers. The meet starts at 2 p.m.
