Tackling Tuition Increases

The cost of tuition at the University of Iowa and the other Board of Regents institutions across the state has been in the news recently. The latest public comments point toward an 8.1 percent increase in the cost of tuition at the University of Iowa for the 2004-05 academic year.

Increases of any size are difficult for anyone providing the financial support that enables a young man or young woman to pursue their academic dreams. As a parent, I listen to this discussion with as much interest as the parents of my children’s classmates.

As the director of athletics at the University of Iowa, I listen even more intently when the topic is tuition increases because the numbers are, in a word, staggering — Instead of writing a check for tuition for one or two students, we write one for 600 students.
