This Week's Honorary Captain?

Oct. 31, 2003

Three-time Iowa football letterman and center Casey Wiegmann has been named honorary captain for the Iowa football team’s home game Saturday against Illinois. Kickoff is set for shortly after 11 a.m. inside historic Kinnick Stadium. The game is a sellout and will be televised live by ESPN Plus.

Wiegmann will be on the sidelines with the Hawkeyes and will accompany the regular game captains to the center of the field for the pre-game coin toss.

Wiegmann, now in his eighth year in the NFL, lettered for the Hawkeyes in 1993-95. He was a team captain and co-MVP of the 1995 Iowa squad. He helped the Hawkeyes reach the 1993 Alamo Bowl and the 1995 Sun Bowl.

He is now the starting center for the 8-0 Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs do not play this weekend. He has played for the Indianapolis Colts, New York Jets, Chicago Bears and the Chiefs during his NFL career.

Wiegmann, a native of Parkersburg, IA, played in the 1995 East-West Shrine Game and the 1995 Hula Bowl. He is the second graduate of Applington-Parkersburg High School to serve as a honorary captain this season. Aaron Kampman filled the role last week when Iowa defeated Penn State to win its sixth game of the season and become bowl-eligible for the third straight season under Ferentz.
