A graduate of Wahlert High School in Dubuque, Iowa, Carolyn Giese, a member of the University of Iowa volleyball team, has been added to the McLeodUSA StarHawk team.
Dubuque Wahlert High School is known for producing outstanding volleyball players, and Giese is no exception. During her freshman year at the UI, she competed in 25 matches, finishing the season with 95 kills and 31 digs. In 2001, Giese competed in 27 matches, recording career-highs with seven blocks at Minnesota and 16 kills versus Ohio State. She sat out the 2002 season.
“We’re so pleased to have Carolyn back,” said UI Head Coach Rita Buck-Crockett. “She’s our number one middle hitter, a leader on our team, and a real threat at the net for us.”
Buck-Crockett also has high praise for Giese as a person. “Carolyn is just an awesome person,” Buck-Crockett said. “She always looks for the positive, has a wonderful sense of humor, and has just a great attitude about everything in general.

“Maybe what I admire about her the most, though,” Buck-Crockett added, “is that she comes from a great family and her family is important to her. That shows up in her care and passion for her teammates. Carolyn is nothing if not a total team player, and she will do whatever it takes to support and encourage her teammates.
“She works hard every single day both at practice and academically, and is always striving to improve in both areas. Her positive attitude sets an excellent example on our team. I’m very proud of all that Carolyn has accomplished.”
Buck-Crockett is so pleased with Giese’s effort this season that she intends to nominate her for all-Big Ten recognition. “Carolyn has earned that nomination,” her coach said. “When a student-athlete takes things to heart like she does and improves every single day, you want them to know their effort is appreciated.”
The StarHawks program is an initiative funded in part by McLeodUSA, a leading telecommunications company with corporate headquarters in Cedar Rapids and a long-time member of the UI’s Partners in Excellence corporate sponsorship program. The StarHawks team is a collection of student-athletes at the University of Iowa who truly represent the very best the intercollegiate athletics program at the UI has to offer. StarHawks typically excel athletically and academically, and also are active in community or leadership activities.
