The Iowa men’s and women’s gymnastics teams competed in the Black & Gold Intra-squad meet, Saturday afternoon, in the North Gym. The meet featured the 2004 men’s and women’s squads who were recently rated fourth and ninth respectively in the Inside Gymnastics preseason poll. The squads were divided into two coed teams. The Black Team captured the title, defeating the Gold Team, 290.6-289.35. The women’s competition was judged by a panel of celebrity judges, including University of Iowa President David Skorton and Iowa Athletic Director Bob Bowlsby, while the men were scored by NCAA qualified judges.
Junior Linas Gaveika took titles on both pommel horse (8.5) and high bar (9.15). Sophomore Michael Reavis was also crowned champion in two events, taking first on both floor exercise (9.2) and vault (9.4). Senior Eric Block won the parallel bars with a score of 8.9, while senior Matt Metzger and junior Kenny Lin were crowned co-champions on the rings (8.95).
Seniors Stephanie Gran and Alexis Maday recorded perfect 10’s and were crowned co-champions on the uneven bars. Gran also took first place on the floor exercise with a score of 9.975. On the vault, Maday and sophomore Kortny Williamson were crowned co-champions with a score of 9.925.
The men gymnasts kick off the 2004 season on January 10, when they travel to Chicago, IL, for the Windy City Invitational. The women begin their campaign on January 2, with a trip to Cancun, Mexico, for the Cancun Invitational.
