It's Tampa!

Dec. 7, 2003

After weeks of watching and waiting, the 2003 Iowa Hawkeyes accepted an offer to play in the 2004 Outback Bowl scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 1, in Tampa. Kickoff is set for shortly after 10 a.m. Iowa time/11 a.m. local (Eastern) time. The game will be televised live to a national audience by ESPN.

Coach Kirk Ferentz’s nationally ranked Iowa Hawkeyes – winners of nine games in 2003 and 20 of their last 25 – will square off against the Florida Gators of the Southeastern Conference. Florida completed the 2003 regular season with an 8-4 record that included a 6-2 mark in SEC play and victories in five of its final six games.

Coach Kirk Ferentz’s 2003 Iowa Hawkeyes will play the Florida Gators in the 2004 Outback Bowl on Jan. 1 in Tampa. It’s the third straight bowl game for the Hawkeyes under Ferentz and his staff.

The 2004 Outback Bowl will be the second college football game between the University of Iowa and the University of Florida. The Gators defeated the Hawkeyes, 14-6, in the 1983 Gator Bowl.

The invitation marks the first appearance in the Outback Bowl by the Iowa Hawkeyes. Iowa has played two bowl games in the state of Florida – the 2003 FedEx Orange Bowl against Southern Cal and the 1983 Gator Bowl.
