THIS WEEK — The Hawkeye men’s and women’s track teams will host the annual Iowa Musco Twilight Meet, called Iowa Musco VI, Saturday at Cretzmeyer Track in Iowa City. Competing teams include Drake, Illinois State, Lincoln, Minnesota, Northern Iowa, Wisconsin, Wisconsin-LaCrosse and Iowa. Field events are scheduled to start at 3 p.m., running event “B” sections are set to start at 3:30 p.m. and running event finals are scheduled to start at 6 p.m. Admission to the co-ed meet is $3 for adults and students. Children ages 5 and under get in free.
In addition to the collegiate competition, Northern Iowa graduate and international competitor Joey Woody will run in the 400-meter hurdles. Fifteen Hawkeye seniors will be making their finals appearance at Cretzmeyer Track. They are Brad Daufeldt, Zach Digney, Warren Holloway, Tony Leick, Russell Peterson, Eric Rothwell, Stephen Traphagen for the men’s team and Sarah Arens, Atalie Barber, Michelle Lahann, Kamesha Marshall, Kyndra Middleton, Georgia Millward, Jessie Strand and Shellene Williams for the women’s team.
2003 TWILIGHT REVIEW — The fifth annual Iowa Musco Twilight meet saw 16 meet records fall at Francis X. Cretzmeyer Track on May 3. Eighty student-athletes from nine schools reached NCAA regional qualifying standards and two University of Iowa athletes set school records. Illinois won the men’s team race with 123.5 points, while Minnesota won the women’s team race with 158 points. The Iowa women placed second (128 points), while the Hawkeye men’s team placed fourth (81 points).
The Iowa 400-meter relay of seniors Nicole Charles and Jiselle Providence and juniors Shellene Williams and Aisha James broke the first meet record of the night with their winning time of 45.27. Hawkeye senior Sarah Arens broke the second meet record and first Iowa school record, winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:38.64) in her first-ever competition in that event. Sophomore Alana Redfern exploded in the javelin with a collegiate-best 181-5, beating runner-up Audrea Wall of Illinois by over 57 feet. Redfern’s mark set a meet, school and Canadian national record. For the Iowa men’s team, junior Bill Neumann set a Cretzmeyer track record in the javelin with his winning throw of 238-3. Redshirt freshman Brian Rae was the other men’s event champion, winning the 5,000 meters with a collegiate-best 14:31.68.
LAST WEEK — The Hawkeyes crowned two champions at the 95th annual Drake Relays in Des Moines, IA. Senior Ken Kemeny won the shot put with a collegiate-best 59-11 1/4 on Friday, while senior Shellene Williams won the special 400 meters with a season-best 52.95 on Saturday. Other Iowa placers included sophomore Adam Hamilton in the hammer throw (206-7 – 2nd), the women’s 3,200-meter relay of senior Michelle Lahann, freshman Shannon Stanley, junior Aisha Hume, senior Atalie Barber (8:48.87 – 2nd), Lahann in the 800 meters (2:06.79 – 3rd), the women’s distance medley relay of Barber, Williams, Hume and senior Sarah Arens (11:34.36 – 3rd), junior Tiff Pedersen in the heptathlon (4,864 points – 4th), senior Eric Rothwell in the discus (177-2 – 4th) and freshman Peaches Roach in the special high jump (5-10 3/4 – 4th).
HAWKEYE COACHES — Head Coaches Larry Wiezcorek and James Grant are in their eighth seasons at the helms of the Iowa men’s and women’s track teams, respectively.
During his career at Iowa, Wieczorek has coached 22 all-Americans and 35 Big Ten Champions. Iowa’s highest conference meet finishes during his tenure is second at the 1999 outdoor meet and fourth at the 1997 indoor meet. As a runner, Wieczorek was a six-time Big Ten champion for Iowa, winning four track and two cross country titles. He was also a four-time all-American. In 1998, Wieczorek was inducted into the National Iowa Varsity Club Hall of Fame. He is assisted by former Iowa all-American and world-class 400-meter hurdler Pat McGhee and three-time all-American and two-time Big Ten shot put champion Scott Cappos.
The Hawkeyes crowned two individual champions and recorded their highest placing under Grant (third) and their highest team point total (89) in school history at the 2004 Big Ten indoor championships. During his career at Iowa, Grant has coached eight all-Americans and 16 Big Ten Champions. As a runner, Grant captained Eastern Michigan University’s 1970 and 1971 track teams, earning all-America honors while specializing in the 400-meter dash, 400-meter hurdles and the mile relay. Grant is assisted by Steve Callaway, who was a decathlete and pole vault school record holder at Indiana, and Layne Anderson, a three-time Southern Conference champion who set 10 school records at The Citadel.
NEXT COMPETITION — The Hawkeyes will compete at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships, May 14-16 in West Lafayette, IN. All events will be held at Rankin Track and Field on the Purdue University campus. All-session tickets are $15 for adults and $9 for seniors, students and youth. Single-session tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for seniors, students and youth.
