The Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series

April 19, 2005

Iowa’s nationally ranked softball program dealt Iowa State a 4-0 defeat Tuesday night at Pearl Field on the University of Iowa campus, a victory that extended the UI’s margin of victory in the inaugural year of the Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series to 13-8.

Iowa won five of the nine events that pit intercollegiate athletics teams representing the two institutions in head-to-head competition during the 2004-05 academic year. The UI also earned two points for having earned a graduation rate for its student-athletes (69 percent) higher than the national average (62 percent), according to the graduation rates data compiled and disseminated annually by the NCAA.

Iowa’s victories came in the Series’ inaugural event, the annual college football game played this academic year in Iowa City and won by the Hawkeyes, 17-10; women’s basketball (89-80), women’s swimming and diving (214-85), men’s basketball (70-63) and softball (4-0).

Iowa State’s victories came in soccer (6-1), wrestling (19-16), and women’s gymnastics twice (195.575-192.04 and 195.85-194.15).

“We’re delighted in the final outcome, obviously. However, we’re equally excited about using what we learned in this first year to make the Cy-Hawk Series better in the years to come,” said UI Director of Athletics Bob Bowlsby.

Bowlsby said Iowa repeating as champions will be a daunting task, noting that, at a minimum, the football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball and wrestling events all will be staged on the Iowa State campus in 2005-06.

The trophy to be presented each year to the winner of the Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series presented by Kraft and Coca-Cola will be awarded to the University of Iowa at a special event scheduled for early this summer. The official schedule for the 2005-06 Cy-Hawk Series will also be announced at that event.
