IOWA CITY – All-American center Don Suchy has been named the Iowa football team’s honorary captain for Saturday’s season opener against Kent State. Kickoff is set for 11:10 a.m. in Kinnick Stadium.
Suchy, a native of Belle Plaine, IA, won letters as a standout center during the 1954 thru 1956 seasons. He helped get the Hawkeyes to their first Rose Bowl his senior season. Suchy was a co-captain and a second team all-American in 1956. He also earned first-team all-Big Ten honors his senior year.
Suchy was drafted by the Cleveland Browns following his collegiate career. He went on to earn a degree in history from the University of Iowa in 1957.
As honorary captain he’ll address the team prior to the game and will be with the Hawkeyes on the sidelines. He’ll also accompany the current game captains to the center of the field for the pre-game coin toss.
