All-American fullback Bill Reichardt, who passed away earlier this year, has been named the Iowa football team’s honorary captain for Saturday’s homecoming game against Michigan State. Accepting the honor and performing the duties of the honorary captain, in his behalf, will be members of his immediate family. They include his sons Doug and Duke, daughter Barb and wife Sue.
Kickoff is set for 11:10 a.m. Saturday in Kinnick Stadium. There are still a few tickets remaining.
Reichardt was a second-team all-American fullback in 1951. He was named the Big Ten’s Most Valuable Player that same year. He was first team all-Big Ten as a junior and senior (1950-51). He was also Iowa’s MVP in 1951. He was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the 1952 NFL draft. He also played in the Chicago Tribune All-Star Game, the Blue-Gray and Senior Bowl all-star games. He was a three-year letterman with the Hawkeyes (1949-50-51).
Doug Reichardt, a native of Des Moines, was an Iowa quarterback and lettered during the 1974 and 1975 seasons.
The family will accompany the current game captains to the center of the field for the pre-game coin toss.
