Gold Tops Black in Intrasquad Meet

The University of Iowa men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams competed in the Black & Gold Intrasquad meet this afternoon at the Fieldhouse Pool. The Gold team walked away victorious, defeating the Black team 108-82.

The Black team got off to a hot start, winning the Women’s 200 Medley Relay in a time of 1:50.19. Senior Jennifer Skolaski recorded three first-place finishes in the 1000 Free (10:45.41), 200 Free (1:54.57), and 500 Free (5:07.81). Junior Cameron Dye took first in the Men’s 200 Free with a time of 1:46.04 while Mariusz Muras finished on top in the Men’s 200 Fly (1:57.99). The women of the Black squad put up victories in the 200 Fly, 200 Back, and 200 Breast. Juniors Andrea Hemphill and Kelly Werner won the 200 Fly (2:13.18) and 200 Back (2:10.23), respectively, while senior Kristen Eide won the 200 Breast in 2:28.14.

The Gold team was dominant in the relays, putting up victories in the Men’s 200 Medley Relay (1:35.62) and 200 Free Relay (1:27.49) as well as the Women’s 200 Free Relay (1:38.87). Elliot Ptasnik paced the Gold squad with victories in both the Men’s 1000 Free (10:22.46) and the Men’s 200 Breast (2:10.58). Seniors Katie Haeger (24.54) and Bryan Rowland (22.09) were victorious for the Gold in the Women’s and Men’s 50 Free, while senior Katelyn Eustis (2:11.15) and junior Trevor Haley (2:01.00) swept the Women’s and Men’s 200 IM. Senior Abby Van Maaren and sophomore Tomasz Dziedzic teamed up to sweep the Women’s and Men’s 100 Free with times of 53.55 and 47.79, respectively. Junior Eric Hahn was victorious in the 200 Back (1:56.53) while Haley won the 500 Free in a time of 4:50.59.

The Hawkeye men and women will both open their 2004-05 seasons vs. Wisconsin on October 22-23. Competition is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday at the Fieldhouse Pool in Iowa City.
