Be Bold, Wave Your Gold

Oct. 12, 2004

Some fans attending Saturday’s football game between Iowa and Ohio State inside historic Kinnick Stadium will be greeted by a pompon on their seat compliments of SkillSoft, the world’s largest e-learning provider. It’s a big game for the Hawkeyes…so be proud, get loud and – if you’ve been gifted with a pom – be bold and wave your gold!

If you aren’t so lucky to be among the chosen few inside Kinnick – and you are an alumnus of the UI – you can still take advantage of the offer that’s being promoted on those poms by the Iowa Hawkeyes in cooperation with the UI Alumni Association.

UI Learning and Development and the Division of Continuing Education at the UI are offering online learning opportunities to all University of Iowa alumni. Since Oct. 1, UI graduates around the world have had access to skill-based business and information technology curriculum through the world wide web. And, through a partnership with the UI Alumni Association, UI grads can activate a free, 30-day trial * of the subscriber course library.

UI alumni receive educational pricing and other added benefits of the UI’s existing contract with SkillSoft, the world’s largest e-learning provider. Alumni can purchase subscriptions for $125 that offer unlimited, year-long, personal usage of 300 courses and hundreds of job aids, ranging from communication and leadership topics to software applications and web design training.

Other learning categories include health, safety and wellness; leadership and management; personal development; technology; and workplace effectiveness.

In addition, Project Management Institute or Microsoft IT certification preparation subscriptions are available separately. Those cost $250 each.

Courses are designed to offer broad-based professional development in an interactive, Windows-based format. While courses are non-credit bearing, continuing education units (CEUs) and skill-mastery assessments will be available.

UI continuing education leaders see this service as a way for the University to offer a flexible, just-in-time learning benefits to its alumni. “It’s a quality program that builds on an existing contract between the University and SkillSoft,” said Maureen McCormick, director of UI Learning and Development.

The University of Iowa has long been committed to increasing the accessibility of its educational programs. Vince Nelson, president of the UI Alumni Association, said he believes the program strengthens the connection that even distant alumni have to the institution.

* — Alumni can access the free offer by visiting www.continuetolearn.uiowa.edu/skillsoft/ until Mar. 30, 2005. Once there, alumni should click “Register” and complete the online form. The status of the alumnus will be verified through the UI’s graduate database. Questions? Call 1-800 272-6430 or (319) 335-2755. And, again, if a pom is at your seat location on Saturday, wave it proudly!
