THIS WEEK — The University of Iowa men’s and women’s swimming teams will host the Wisconsin Badgers Friday and Saturday at the Fieldhouse Pool. Competition is set to begin at 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday. There is no admission charge.
SCOUTING WISCONSIN — The 2003-04 women’s team placed fourth at the Big Ten championships and captured its highest national finish (10th). The women are led by senior co-captain Carly Piper who earned a gold medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece by helping her 800-meter freestyle relay team to a world-record time of 7:53.42.The Wisconsin men’s team took fifth at the Big Ten championships and came in 16th at the NCAAs. Senior co-captain Adam Mania holds the UW record in three individual events–the 100 and 200 backstroke and the 200 IM. The Wisconsin men and women return nine 2004 all-Americans.
GOLD TOPS BLACK IN INTRASQUAD MEET — The Gold team walked away with a 108-82 victory over the Black Squad at the Iowa intrasquad meet Oct. 9. Jennifer Skolaski recorded three first-place finishes in the 100, 200 and 500 free while Cameron Dye took first in the men’s 200 free for the Black team. The Gold team put up victories in the men’s 200 medley relay and 200 free relay as well as the women’s 200 free relay. Elliot Ptasnik paced the Gold team with victories in both the men’s 1000 free and 200 breast.
WOMEN’S HEAD COACH Marc Long — Former Hawkeye assistant coach Marc Long enters his first season as interim head coach after serving two seasons as assistant. Prior to joining the women’s swimming program, Long served as Iowa’s assistant men’s swimming coach from 1998-2001. As a Hawkeye swimmer, Long was a six-time all-American, a two-time Big Ten Champion and a two-time first team all-Big Ten selection. He is assisted by former Hawkeye swimmer Frannie DeBord.
MEN’S HEAD COACH John Davey — Former Hawkeye all-American John Davey is in his seventh year as head swim coach. He has an 18-33 overall mark at Iowa, going 8-4 last season. Davey is the only Big Ten athlete in any sport to ever be named conference Athlete of the Year in their sport four consecutive years. While at Iowa, Davey won 10 Big Ten titles and was a 10-time all-American. He is assisted by former Wisconsin all-American Robert Pinter.
DIVING COACH Bob Rydze — Bob Rydze is in his 30th year as diving coach of the men’s and women’s teams at the University of Iowa, and is the dean of Big Ten swimming and diving coaches.
