The University of Iowa men’s swimming team was swept today in a three-way dual competition. Iowa fell to 17th ranked Purdue 208-86, 14th ranked Indiana 185.5-93.5 and Southern Illinois by a score of 187-105. Iowa fell to 2-6 (0-4 Big Ten) with the losses, Indiana improved their record to 6-2 (2-0 Big Ten) with a pair of wins over Iowa and Southern Illinois, while Purdue also improved with a pair of victories over the Hawkeyes and Sulukis to 4-0 (2-0 Big Ten). Southern Illinois went to 2-4 (0-1 MVC) with a victory and a pair of losses in today’s competition.

Despite the three losses the Hawkeyes had several strong performances Saturday. Senior Alex Boyce came away with the only Hawkeye victory in the 100 butterfly (50.64). Boyce also competed in the 50 free, where he finished sixth (21.06). Sophomore Paul Divan finished fourth in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke events. Junior Andrei Ciurca had a solid showing in the 100 and 200 backstroke events. Ciurca finished sixth (51.96) in the 100 and fourth (1:53.04) in the 200. Senior Elliot Ptasnik had the second highest finish for Iowa in the 200 breaststroke. Ptasnik finished second in the event in a time of 2:05.53, and also placed fifth (1:58.55) in the 200 individual medley. The Hawkeyes’ 200 medley relay team finished third in a time of 1:33.79, which was the highest finish of any Iowa relay team. The team consisted of Andrei Ciurca, Calvin Shelangoski, Alex Boyce and Bryan Rowland.

The Hawkeyes will head to Honolulu, HI for winter training and return to competition January 22 in Minneapolis, MN against defending Big Ten champions Minnesota at 1 p.m.
