Davey Resigns as Swim Coach

Dec. 20, 2004

Iowa men’s Swimming Coach John Davey has resigned his position, effective immediately. Davey cited personal reasons for tendering his resignation to Iowa Athletics Director Robert Bowlsby.

“John has been an outstanding representative of the University of Iowa and the Iowa Athletic Department,” said Bowlsby. “We always hate to lose someone of his caliber and talents.”

Marc Long, a former Hawkeye all-American and currently women’s interim head coach, will assume the role of interim men’s coach in addition to his duties with the women’s team. The men’s assistant coach, Robert Pinter, and women’s assistant, Frannie DeBord, will assume the position of assistant coaches for both men and women’s swimming. Diving Coach Bob Rydze will continue to coach both men and women divers.

Davey was in his seventh season as head coach of the Iowa men’s team. During his swimming career at Iowa he was, and still is, the only Big Ten athlete (in any sport) to be named Athlete of the Year four times. He was a 10-time all-American and a 10-time Big Ten titlist.
