The University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving team is in seventh place after the first day of competition at the 2005 Big Ten Championships. The Hawkeyes tallied 42 points with fifth and 10th place finishes in the first two events.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Jennifer Skolaski, Katie Haeger, Kelly Werner, and Abby VanMaaren placed fifth with a finals time of 1:43.13. The Hawkeyes shaved over three seconds off their previous season-best time of 1:46.14.

In the 800-yard free relay, Katie Martin, Skolaski, VanMaaren and Katelyn Eustis finished in 7:31.65, good enough for 10th place. The time also shattered their previous season-best time of 7:40.71.

Iowa will continue competition at the Big Ten Championships on Friday. Preliminary heats of the 500 free, 200 IM and 50 free start at 11 a.m. inside the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
