PARK RIDGE, IL – The Big Ten Conference announced its 2005 all-Big Ten teams Tuesday, and it included Iowa senior Jamie Cavey, junior Crystal Smith and freshman Krista VandeVenter.
Jamie Cavey |
Cavey was honored as an all-Big Ten second team selection by the media and third team by the coaches. Cavey’s all-around talents garnered her all-Big Ten accolades for the second straight season. The 6-3 center ranks eighth in the Big Ten in overall games scoring (16.4) and rebounding (6.8), third in field goal percentage (.562) and fourth in blocked shots (1.81).
A team tri-captain, Cavey posted six double-doubles this season, including three in the last five games. The native of Mechanicsville, Iowa, netted double figures in 25-of-27 games, including a season-high 29 points vs. Northwestern. She currently ranks 13th in Iowa career scoring (1,165), 17th in rebounding (457) and fifth in blocks (85). Forty-nine of her 85 rejections came her senior season, which ranks fifth in a single-season at Iowa.
Crystal Smith |
Smith was named to the all-Big Ten third team by the coaches and was an honorable mention selection by the media. The native of Haughton, Louisiana, ranks sixth in the conference in overall games scoring (16.5), eighth in field goal percentage (.498) and free throw percentage (.814) and fifth in steals (2.19). Smith scored double figures in 24-of-27 games, including totaling 20 points or more eight times.
Smith was named Big Ten Player of the Week on Dec. 20 after leading Iowa to an impressive road victory at in-state rival Drake on Dec. 18. A team tri-captain, she also helped lead Iowa to a perfect 11-0 non-conference record and earned Most Valuable Player laurels in both the Hawkeye Challenge and Junkanoo Jam holiday tournaments.
Iowa joined Michigan State, Ohio State and Penn State as the only league schools to have two or more student-athletes named to first, second and/or third all-Big Ten teams.
VandeVenter was selected to the all-Big Ten Freshman team by the coaches. VandeVenter ranks first on the team in rebounding (7.4), fourth in scoring (7.4) and assists (57), second in blocks (15) and third in steals (27). The native of Osseo, Minnesota, currently ranks fifth in the Big Ten in overall games rebounding. Her rebounding average in overall games (7.4) and conference contests (6.8) lead all league freshmen.
The 6-2 power forward posted two double-doubles this season (Creighton and Illinois) and led the Hawkeyes in rebounding 14 times. She has corralled 201 rebounds this season, which ranks second in Iowa freshman rebounding in a single season. VandeVenter tallied double figures in six games, including a career-high 19 points in a thrilling overtime victory at Creighton on Dec. 10. She becomes Iowa’s second selection to the all-Big Ten Freshman team in three years (Johanna Solverson, 2003).
Cavey and Smith become Iowa’s 20th and 21st student-athletes to be honored on an all-Big Ten team.
Ohio State’s Jessica Davenport was named the Big Ten Player of the Year by both the media and coaches. Wisconsin’s Jolene Anderson was recognized as Freshman of the Year by both the media and coaches. The coaches recognized Ohio State’s Jim Foster as Coach of the Year, while the media honored Michigan State’s Joanne P. McCallie.
Sixth-seeded Iowa (19-8, 8-8) opens Big Ten Tournament competition when it plays 11th-seeded Michigan (5-22, 1-15) Thursday at approximately 7 pm. (CST) at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, IN. The game will be televised live on FSN Chicago.
