Townsend to Leave Football Team

May 9, 2005

Iowa junior wide receiver James Townsend announced today he will be leaving the Hawkeye football team next season, but hopes to return in 2006.

“I will be leaving the University and the Iowa Football program next year due to personal reasons,” explained Townsend. “My hopes are to rejoin the team in time for the 2006 season and to earn my degree at Iowa.”

Townsend played in 10 games last season, catching three passes for 82 yards and one touchdown. His touchdown reception was a 60-yard pass from quarterback Drew Tate in Iowa’s victory at Minnesota. The native of Delran, NJ, caught three balls for 16 yards in four contests his freshman year. Townsend was one of seven true freshman to see action in 2003.
