A Hot One

June 24, 2005

Can you say hot? Say, 95 degrees hot?

It’s been a very hot week in Iowa City, but that hasn’t slowed the progress at historic Kinnick Stadium.

Workers continue to lay brick, clean brick, hang and paint drywall, install hand rails and, now, continue to install the “guts” of the scoreboard structure – a system of catwalks that will provide the footing for the installation of what will be seen on game-days by the 70,000 fans who routinely fill the home of the nationally ranked Iowa Hawkeyes.

In addition to that which was noted above, workers are also installing windows in the spaces on the south façade, flagpoles at the top of the south façade, and continue to get deeper and deeper on the details — concesssions stands are now visible in the concourse of the south grandstandand — and other finer points of the $90 million project.

To the northwest, work continues on the southern and northern-most pieces of the new press box and, to the far west, work continues on the parking lot immediately west of the stadium.

And, for those fans of the Hawkeyes who were wondering about the heat and the effect it might be having on the playing field, there probably isn’t a home owner in eastern Iowa who would balk at having the turf of Kinnick Stadium in their front yard – it is green, it is lush, it is soft and it is fast.

Click HERE to visit kinnickrenovation.com, the official world wide web site of the renovation of the UI’s prized football facility. Once there, fans of the Hawkeyes can check out the latest additions to the photo gallery – including 18 new photographs taken today – or peruse the artist renderings of the finished product.

Now. The answer to last week’s “Mystery Photo.” Yes. The photo was of the superstructure that will rest at the very top of the new scoreboard. It is the oval in which a Tigerhawk will be displayed. The winner of four tickets to the Hawkeyes’ 2005 season opener Sept. 3 against Ball State is the fan who identified themselves as “Brooke Shields” in the e-mail that was received at 1:37 p.m., June 16
