Iowa Defeats Air Force In Overtime, 3-2

USAF Academy, CO – The University of Iowa women’s soccer team defeated Air Force, 3-2 in overtime Sunday at the Cadet Soccer Stadium. Freshman Kelsey Shaw scored the game-winning goal off a free-kick from senior Katelyn Quinn three and a half minutes into the overtime period to seal the victory.

Iowa started off strong, recording six shots in the first 17 minutes of the contest. Freshman Stephanie Hyink found the back of the net in the 30th minute off a nice pass from Sarah Stephenson to give Iowa a 1-0 lead.

Air Force leveled the score in the 40th minute after Lindsay Temes scored and the game was tied, 1-1 at halftime.

The Falcons came out firing in the second half, scoring a goal in the 48th minute when Meredith Benson headed in a corner to put the Falcons up, 2-1.

Iowa scored the equalizer in the 73rd minute after Hyink scored her second goal, this time a header off a beautiful cross from Stephenson.

The Hawkeye defense stayed solid throughout the second half, keeping the match level at 2-2. Sophomore goalkeeper Lindsey Boldt recorded three of her four saves in the final 12 minutes of the contest to help send the match to overtime.

Iowa scored the golden goal in the 94th minute when Shaw headed a free-kick off the foot of Quinn from about five yards out to give the Hawkeyes their first victory of the season.

Hyink led the way for Iowa, scoring two goals off three shots. Stephenson recorded two assists while Quinn added one assist. Shaw added one goal on two shots while Boldt recorded four saves.

“We are tremendously proud of the way our student-athletes battled throughout the contest,” coach Baker said. “We bounced back and showed a lot of heart today. We couldn’t be happier with the way our student-athletes performed all weekend.”

The Hawkeyes open up their home season on Friday against Oklahoma State as a part of the Big Ten/Big XII Challenge. Match time is set for 7 p.m. at the Iowa Soccer Complex.
