University of Iowa starting defensive back Antwan Allen has been suspended for Saturday’s football opener against Ball State. Head Coach Kirk Ferentz made the announcement Monday.
Ferentz made the following statement:
“As a result of his recent guilty verdict, Antwan Allen will be suspended from our opening game on September 3rd. In addition, Antwan will be required to do an additional 20 hours of community service during the fall semester. (He already served 20 hours in the spring and completed anger management counseling.),” said Ferentz. “We do not condone the use of physical force and I feel confident Antwan fully understands that. He is very regretful for his actions in this incident.”
Ferentz added that further steps could be taken after the September 2nd sentencing, or as a result of the University’s ruling as it regards to the Student Athlete Code of Conduct policy.
“I am horribly sorry for any harm I have caused and I accept full responsibility for my actions,” said Allen. “I deeply regret that this incident took place and pledge to be a model member of the community in the future.”
Allen, a senior cornerback from Tampa, FL, has started 38 straight Hawkeye games. He was an honorable mention all-Big Ten pick last season.
