Hawkeyes Win in Four

ARLINGTON, TX – The University of Iowa volleyball team defeated the University of Texas-Arlington, 3-1, in the UTA Invivational Friday.

Catherine Smale recorded a double-double for Iowa, pounding out 22 kills and getting 17 digs.

Game one was a marathon, with the two teams trading the lead most of the way. Iowa looked to put the game away, leading 29-28, but a costly error allowed UTA to tie things up. The Hawkeyes then had to fight back from four consecutive game-point serves before finally pulling ahead and taking the game 35-33.

In game two, UTA took an early lead and held it until a Tiana Costanzo kill gave Iowa a 21-20 lead and forced the Mavericks into a timeout. Texas-Arlington tied things up immediately after the break, then took a lead they would hold the rest of the way.

After taking a 6-5 lead in game three, the Hawkeyes never looked back en route to a 30-21 win. Stacy Vitali closed things out for Iowa, recording the Hawkeyes’ last three points on a block and two kills.

In the final game, Iowa lead most of the way until UTA mounted a late comeback and took a 26-25 lead. The Hawkeyes fought back and rattled off five consecutive points to take the win and end the match.

The Hawkeyes will wrap-up the UTA Invitational tomorrow with a pair of games against Arkansas-Little Rock at noon and Wake Forest at 5 p.m.
