MADISON, WI – The University of Iowa volleyball team fell to the No. 10 Wisconsin Badgers, 3-0, Sunday in the Wisconsin Field House. The Hawkeyes lost by scores of 28-30, 17-30 and 21-30. Iowa’s record goes to 10-4 (1-1), while the Badgers are 10-1 (2-0).
In game one was a tight battle that saw both teams run neck and neck the whole way. Wisconsin took an early led, but Iowa wouldn’t let them pull away, and eventually tied the game at 28-28. The Badgers rattled off a pair of kills to seal the game.
Iowa hit well in game one, recording a .333 team attack percentage. Individually, freshman Catherine Smale had a team best seven kills and .700 hitting percentage. Sophomore Stacy Vitali had six kills and a .600 percentage. She ended the match with a team-best 12 kills.
Wisconsin carried the momentum from their game one win into the second game and jumped out to an early 8-4 lead. The Hawkeyes managed to claw back to get the score within two, but the Badgers pulled away after that to take the 30-17 win.
In game three, Wisconsin closed the door on the Hawkeyes with a 30-21 win. Iowa fell in an early hole and the Badgers wouldn’t let them out.
Freshman libero Emily Hiza finished the day with 12 digs, while freshman setter Kiley Fister had 28 assists.
The Hawkeyes return to action Tuesday when they host in-state rival Northern Iowa at 7 p.m. in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
