St. Paul, MN – The University of Iowa women’s soccer team was defeated by Minnesota, 1-0 Friday night. The Golden Gophers scored the lone goal in the 17th minute for the win.
Becky Dellaria scored for Minnesota on a breakaway chance early in the match to put the Golden Gophers on top, 1-0. The Hawkeyes tried to net the equalizer before halftime, registering three shots and gaining a corner with a minute and a half left, but could not beat Minnesota goalkeeper Molly Schneider.
The Hawkeye offense once again took charge in the second half and outshot the Golden Gophers, 6-4, but still could not find the netting. Senior Whitney Strain blasted a shot in the 90th minute but Schneider once again came up with the save to preserve the victory.
Iowa’s defense held Minnesota to only nine shots, three of which were on target. The Hawkeyes outshot the Golden Gophers, 10-9 for the match.
Freshman Stephanie Hyink and Strain paced the offense. Hyink recorded three shots (two on goal). Strain registered two shots on goal for the Hawkeyes. Freshman goalkeeper Erin MacIsaac had two saves in the loss.
Iowa travels to University Park, PA to face the second-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions on Sunday. Match time is set for 11 a.m. central time.
