Today’s loss snapped a 22-game winning streak in Kinnick Stadium and a 15-game home conference winning streak. Before today, Iowa’s last home loss came to Iowa State (36-31) on Sept. 14, 2002. The Hawkeyes’ last home Big Ten defeat came against Michigan (32-26) on Oct. 27, 2001.
Michigan won the toss and elected to receive. The Hawkeyes have started on offense in 69 of their last 75 games. Iowa has started on offense in 71-of-81 contests under Kirk Ferentz. The last time Iowa did not start on offense was at Purdue (10/8/05).
Michigan failed to score on its first possession. Only two Iowa opponents scored (touchdowns) on their opening possession this season (Purdue and Ohio State).
Iowa scored a touchdown on its opening possession on a QB Drew Tate to WR Herb Grigsby 13-yard pass completion. The Hawkeyes also scored touchdowns on their first possession in games against Ball State, Northern Iowa, Illinois and Purdue. Iowa’s opening scoring drive was covered 85 yards on nine plays. The 85-yard drive is the Hawkeyes’ longest scoring drive of the year.
Iowa scored seven first-quarter points and has out-scored its opponents 77-0 in the first quarter in five home games this year.
Today’s sellout crowd of 70,585 is Iowa’s 16th straight Kinnick Stadium sellout dating back to the 2003 season. The last Iowa game not a sellout was vs. Buffalo (9/6/03).
WR Herb Grigsby caught touchdown passes of 13 and four yards in the first half. The touchdown receptions were his second and third scores of the season and his career.
QB Drew Tate completed 27-39 passes for 288 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He has thrown two touchdown passes or more in six of eight games this season. Moreover, he has tossed two touchdowns or more in all five home contests this season. He has thrown two touchdown passes or more in 14 career games, including 11 of his 13 games dating back to last year. Tate now has 34 career touchdown passes, which ranks fifth on Iowa’s all-time QB list. The junior surpassed Kyle McCann in both career passing yards and total yards today and now ranks fifth in both categories.
Four of TE Scott Chandler’s five receptions in the first half moved the chains. Moreover, three of the five receptions were on third downs. Chandler finished the game with eight receptions for 90 yards.
The Hawkeyes were penalized 11 times for 94 yards and are season highs in both penalties and yardage. Iowa’s previous high was six flags for 42 yards at Iowa State.
DM Miguel Merrick’s 20-yard interception return in the second quarter is Iowa’s longest interception of the season besting Jovon Johnson’s 18-yard return vs. Northern Iowa.
Michigan converted a QB Drew Tate interception into three points in the third quarter. Iowa was unable to convert two Michigan turnovers (1 fumble and 1 interception) into any points. Both Hawkeye drives that began following Wolverine turnovers started in Michigan territory.
Instant replay was used three times today with two calls upheld and the other reversed. The call that was reversed resulted in a Michigan fumble that Iowa recovered on Michigan’s 28-yard line.
RB Albert Young carried the ball 30 times for 153 yards. He surpassed 100 rushing yards for the fourth straight game and fifth time (Iowa State, Illinois, Purdue, Indiana and Michigan) this season.
Michigan scored on a 52-yard passing play to grab a 17-14 advantage with 8:51 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Wolverine lead snapped a 46-quarter streak in which the Hawkeyes did not trail in Kinnick Stadium. The last time Iowa trailed in a home contest was 6-3 in their regular season finale vs. Minnesota (Nov. 15, 2003). The streak spanned 11 games.
Today was Iowa’s third overtime game and first in Kinnick Stadium. Today’s overtime contest is the Hawkeyes’ first since a 42-35 overtime victory at Penn State on Sept. 28, 2002. Iowa also won a 26-23 double overtime thriller at Penn State on Nov. 4, 2000. Iowa falls to 2-1 in overtime games, while Michigan improves to 5-0.
QB Drew Tate engineered a nine-play, 74-yard drive that culminated with a PK Kyle Schlicher 32-yard field as time expired to tie the game (17-17).
PK Kyle Schlicher scored eight points today (2 FGs, 2 PATs) to increase his career point total to 156. Schlicher ranks 12th all-time in Iowa career scoring.
Iowa’s defense held Michigan to 4-of-12 on third downs today.

Iowa falls to 32-2 when leading at the half and 35-1 when leading after three quarters, dating back to the 2002 season. Additionally, the Hawkeyes fall to 13-2 in October, dating back to 2002.
LB Chad Greenway, with 16 tackles today, moved from eighth place on Iowa’s career tackle list to sixth passing Matt Hughes and Tom Rusk. Greenway has 369 career stops. Greenway has posted double digit tackles 22 times in his career, including seven times this year.
LB Abdul Hodge had a game-high 20 tackles today to move from fifth place to fourth, passing Fred Barr, on Iowa’s career tackle chart with 385. Hodge has recorded double digit tackles 19 times in his career and five times in 2005.
