IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa volleyball team defeated the Indiana Hoosiers in a thrilling five-game match Friday night at Carver Hawkeye Arena. Iowa (14-11, 4-8) defeated Indiana (9-14, 2-9) by scores of 30-28, 30-23, 23-30, 26-30 and 15-7.
Junior middle blocker Melanie Meister had a monster game for the Hawkeyes, hitting at a blistering .583 clip, recording 16 kills and five blocks. Meister hit 1.000 through the first two games – both Iowa wins.
Sophomore outside hitter Stacy Vitali had a match-high 23 kills, while freshman Laura Kremer had her best game as a Hawkeye with nine kills, seven digs, five blocks and a .333 hitting percentage.
The Hawkeyes won the first two games and looked to put things away in game three until the Hoosiers rattled off seven-consecutive points to take a commanding 23-26 lead en route to the win.
Iowa came out with a vengeance in game four, sprinting to a 10-2 lead. Indiana came right back to cut the lead to 13-10, eventually tying the game at 18-18. Things went back and forth until the Hoosiers gradually pulled away for the 30-26 win and forced game five.
Once again, Iowa came blasting out of the gates and took a 6-1 lead. This time, the Hawkeyes were able to put the Hoosiers away. At match point, Kremer ripped her final kill of the night to give Iowa the win.
The Hawkeyes return to action a week from tonight when they travel to Michigan State for a 8 p.m. (CST) match with the Spartans.
