Champaign, IL – The University of Iowa ended the 2005 season with a 4-1 loss to Illinois Friday night in Champaign. The Hawkeyes ended the season with a 3-12-4 overall record and a 1-7-2 record in Big Ten play.
Illinois had the first scoring opportunity in the 39th minute after an Iowa foul inside the box led to a penalty kick. Christen Karniski stepped to the spot and drilled the PK, but Hawkeye freshman goalkeeper Erin MacIsaac made a diving save to clear the ball off the line.
The Illini found the back of the net just before halftime in the 44th minute when Jessica Bayne blasted a shot that beat MacIsaac and Illinois led the match, 1-0 heading into halftime.
Illinois struck again just 11 seconds into the second half when Ella Masar belted a shot from about 15 yards out to give the Illini a 2-0 lead.
Iowa made the match interesting in the 63rd minute when senior Katelyn Quinn received an excellent thru ball from freshman Manon Engelhardt inside the box and beat the Illini keeper from eight yards out. The goal was Quinn’s third of the season.
Illinois solidified its lead in the 84th minute after Charlotte Cooke caught MacIsaac off her line and placed the ball in the back netting.
The Illini earned another penalty just before the end whistle in the 84th minute, but MacIsaac once again came up with the save. However, the rebound fell right to the feet of Kelly Campbell who scored the final goal of the match.
In her final game as a Hawkeye, Quinn led the offense with one goal and three shots. Senior Whitney Strain, also playing in her last match, recorded one shot. MacIsaac recorded eight saves, two of which were on penalty kicks.
