IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa volleyball team was defeated by the No. 22 Purdue Boilermakers, 3-1, tonight in Carver Hawkeye Arena. The Hawkeyes (14-18, 4-15) won game one 30-27 before falling 21-30, 18-30 and 22-30.
Freshman hitter Catherine Smale had a team-best 14 kills for Iowa. Freshman libero Emily Hiza had a game-high 24 digs for the Hawkeyes, while Kiley Fister put up 38 assists.
For Purdue, senior setter Renata Dargan was just one kill shy of a triple-double with nine kills, 50 assists and 16 digs.
The Hawkeyes fell behind 7-1 early in game one before storming back and eventually taking a 11-10 lead. Iowa never looked back and led the rest of the way, taking the 30-27 game one win. Smale was the story for Iowa in the first game, recording seven kills and a .400 attack percentage.
In game two, Purdue jumped out to another early lead, but was able to hold on this time. A Smale kill cut the score to 19-22, but it was as close as Iowa would get in the game.
Iowa hung tough early on in game three, only to see the Boilermakers rip-off a pair of five point runs that widened the gap to an insurmountable lead.
In the final game, Purdue jumped out to a 17-10 lead before senior Justeen Patton led the Hawkeyes on a ferocious comeback. Iowa scored six-straight points behind Patton’s serving, which included back-to-back service aces, to bring the game within a point at 17-16. Purdue responded to the challenge and rattled of four-straight points to extend their lead and coast to victory.
The Hawkeyes will wrap-up the 2005 season tomorrow night with a game against Illinois at 7 p.m. The team will use the game to honor it’s senior class of Patton and Lauren Bruckner.
