The Bowl Game

More About Iowa Football

As the 2005 Iowa Hawkeyes continue their preparations for the Jan. 2 date with the Florida Gators in the 2006 Outback Bowl – Iowa’s fourth straight “New Year’s Day” bowl game – work continues in a big way at Kinnick Stadium where the multi-million dollar renovation of the UI’s prized football facility is hitting high gear for the second time in 13 months.

Today, the following work was on-going in the southernmost section of the new pressbox: Pipefitters working on the sprinkler, plumbing, heating and cooling systems; electricians working every floor of the five story building, carpenters working the upper two levels where the metal studs for the walls are being installed, drywallers working the hallways and levels one and two where walls are in place and being prepared for paint.

Beginning in January, hawkeyesports.com will make weekly visits to Kinnick Stadium to provide fans a steady diet of information and photographs of the progress being made on the new press box, and inside the west and east concourses of Kinnick Stadium.

There was also tile being installed in bathrooms on the first level and plumbing fixtures being installed on levels three and four. Of course, work continues in the space now open with the demolition of the stadium’s old press box. The point of emphasis there is the drilling and the pouring of the caissons that will serve as the foundation for the structure.

Perhaps the most dramatic of changes – with the obvious exception of the removal of the old press box – was the work done inside the west concourse. The concrete walkway inside that space is gone. Also gone is a portion of the wall and the floor inside the spaces that were previously restrooms and concessions stands.

To check out the progress, visit the photo gallery inside kinnickrenovation.com, the official world wide web site of the renovation of historic Kinnick Stadium. (hawkeyesports.com apologizes in advance for the quality of the images. The light inside the new structure and the weather outside the structure is challenging for digital photography.)

You might also take a peek at what the finished product is to be by reviewing the artists renderings and schematics behind the “Photo Galleries” link at kinnickrenovation.com.
