This weekend the University of Iowa track team competed alongside over 75 teams from around the country in the Iowa State Classic in Ames, IA. The meet featured schools from the Big 12 and Big Ten Conferences, as well as many others schools including UCLA, Alabama, Clemson, Mississippi and Kentucky.
Sophomore Meghan Armstrong qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships when she won the mile in 4:45.43 and sophomore Kineke Alexander provisionally qualified in the 200 meters with a third place finish in 23.87. Junior Peaches Roach placed third in the high jump and qualified for the NCAAs when she cleared 5-10.75.
New Iowa records were also set during the weekend. Tiffany Johnson set a new indoor record in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.33, which was good enough for third place and a spot in the championships. Throwers Erin O’Hern and Becca Franklin both broke the previous indoor record in the weight throw. O’Hern holds the new high mark with a toss of 51-7.75 and Franklin is second with a throw of 51-1.
Sophomore Shane Maier was the top men’s performer on the day. He improved his provisional qualifying mark when he placed 7th in the shot put with a toss of 59-5.75.
The Hawkeyes host the Iowa Invitational next Friday at the University Recreation Building on the Iowa campus. Field events are slated to begin at 4:30 p.m. with the first running event to begin at 5:05 p.m.
