Three Iowa women tracksters and two Hawkeye men competed this weekend in the Alex Wilson Invitational in South Bend, IN. The meet proved successful when three more athletes qualified for the NCAA Championship Meet in Fayetteville, AK, next weekend.
Freshman Krista Anderson provisionally qualified in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 9:29.75. It is the fourth-fastest time in Iowa history behind two all-Americans and one U.S. Olympian. It is also over ten seconds faster than Anderson’s 3,000 meter times from spring 2005.
Sophomore Meghan Armstrong ran a collegiate best time of 4:40.59, five seconds better than her previous personal best. As of today, that is the fourth fastest time in the nation and is second on Iowa’s top ten performance list. The mark also improves Armstrong’s provisional qualifying mark.
Tiffany Johnson ran and qualified for the NCAA meet in the 60-meter hurdles. Johnson has already provisionally qualified in that event with an Iowa record time of 8.33 seconds.
Junior Micah VanDenend and senior Dan Haut provisionally qualified in the 3,000 and 5,000 meter runs, respectively. VanDenend finished the 3,000 meters with a personal best time of 8:00.0. Haut qualified in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:06.01, also a collegiate best.
Several Hawkeyes will be competing in the NCAA Indoor Championships next Friday and Saturday. Kineke Alexander is going in the 200 and 400 meters and as a part of the 1,600-meter relay team. Johnson, Lindsey McCalla and Ashley Granger make up the rest of the 1,600-meter relay team. Junior Peaches Roach is qualified for the meet in the high jump. VanDenend and Haut join sophomores Shane Maier and Matty Gorman, and junior Adam Hamilton as qualifiers for the national meet. Maier is qualified in the shot put, Gorman is going in the long jump and Hamilton will compete in the weight throw.
