The University of Iowa women’s track team sent several athletes to sunny California this weekend to compete in the 48th Mt. SAC Relays. The meet, billed as “The Largest International Track & Field Invitational,” featured athletes from American colleges and universities, professional athletes and international competitors alike.
Sophomore standout Kineke Alexander won gold in the Invitational University/Open section of the 400 meters. Alexander, running the event for the first time this outdoor season, won in a time of 51.83. That time qualifies her for the NCAA regional meet and is just slightly off the Iowa outdoor record time of 51.71.
Junior Tiffany Johnson reset the school record in the 100-meter hurdles for the second consecutive week. Johnson finished in sixth place with a time of 13.53, breaking the previous record by one one-hundredth of a second and also improving her NCAA regional qualifying mark.
The Hawkeyes 1,600-meter relay team of Lindsey McCalla, Ashley Granger, Alexander and Johnson earned the silver medal by just a hair with a time of 3:38.26. Those four runners are now qualified for the NCAA regional meet held at the end of May.
Next Saturday the University of Iowa hosts the annual Musco Twilight Invitational at Cretzmeyer Track and Field.
