Hawkeyes Successful At Drake Relays

April 30, 2006

The University of Iowa track team made the best of a bad day of weather and had several top finishers. On the final day of the 2006 Drake Relays the Hawkeyes had two champions and are sending more athletes to the NCAA Regional meet.

Junior Tiffany Johnson won gold in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.58. The Danville, IL, native has dominated competition this outdoor season and owns the indoor and outdoor school records in that event. Johnson is also qualified for the regional meet later this season.

Also qualifying for the regional meet was sophomore Meghan Armstrong. Armstrong was invited to run in a select section of the 1,500 meters and placed third with a career-best time of 4:26.01.

Kineke Alexander won the special section of the 400 meters. The sophomore sprinter won in a time of 52.05. Alexander, who owns the indoor and outdoor records in the 400 meters, has already qualified for the regional meet. She also won the NCAA indoor title earlier this year.

Junior Adam Hamilton earned the bronze medal in the hammer throw with a toss of 213-6. Hamilton and several of his Hawkeye teammates are qualified in field events for the NCAA meet.

The 2006 Big Ten Outdoor Championships are next up for the Iowa team. The men and women both compete May 12-14 in East Lansing, MI.
