May 12, 2006

EAST LANSING, MI – University of Iowa junior Adam Hamilton kicked off the Big Ten Outdoor Championships with a bang, winning the men’s hammer throw Friday afternoon at Michigan State’s Ralph Young Track and Field Facility in East Lansing, MI. His throw of 208-1 bested runner-up Will Fleming of Indiana’s toss of 205-5. Hawkeye senior Tim Brodersen placed eighth with a toss of 173-2. The men’s hammer throw is the first event finals of the three-day championships.

With the win, Hamilton picked up the 109th outdoor conference title in Iowa school history and became the fourth Hawkeye to win the hammer throw at the Big Ten meet. Arno van der Westhuizen won titles in 1999 and 2000, and Jim Costello won the event in 2002.

In the team standings, the Iowa men are in fourth place with 11 points and the Hawkeye women are in ninth place with 1.33 points. Minnesota leads the women’s team race (33.50) and Ohio State leads the men (17).

Sophomore Ryan Niver is in seventh place in the decathlon with 3,433 points after the first five events. He posted season-best marks in the 100 meters (11.35) and long jump (21-4) as part of the 10-event competition. Wisconsin’s Nathan Brown leads the field with 3,820 points.

Senior Dan Haut and junior Jeff Kent beat their previous collegiate-best 10,000-meter times by over a minute in the final race of the day. Haut placed ninth in 30:03.08, which ranks sixth on Iowa’s all-time best performers list and Kent placed 15th (30:34.58).

The Hawkeye women’s team had competitors in three events on Friday. Sophomore Racheal Marchand provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 10,000 meters with the collegiate-best 34:51.68 she ran for eighth place. That time ranks fifth on Iowa’s all-time bests list. Junior Sarah Burgett placed eighth in the pole vault (11-5 3/4) and senior Erin O’Hern placed 12th in the hammer throw (152-6).

Saturday’s events begin at 9:30 a.m. with the decathlon 110-meter hurdles and conclude at 6:45 p.m. with the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase.
