EAST LANSING, MI – Hawkeye senior Tim Brodersen successfully defended his Big Ten discus title Saturday at the conference championships in East Lansing, MI, winning the event with a throw of 181-2. The women’s squad recorded winners in three preliminary races, while both teams advanced athletes in eight events to Sunday’s finals.

In the second day of Big Ten competition, the Hawkeye men’s team is in fourth place with 29 points, while the women’s squad is in 10th place with 4.33. Wisconsin leads the men’s standings with 64.50, holding a two-point lead over second-place Minnesota. Minnesota leads the women’s field with 96.50, leading second-place Michigan by almost 50 points.

Despite the day’s rain and cool temperatures, Brodersen became the 17th Hawkeye in school history to win back-to-back Big Ten titles in the same event. Minnesota’s Karl Erickson placed second with a throw of 179-5. Hawkeye sophomore Shane Maier placed seventh (163-2), freshman A.J. Curtis placed eighth (163-1) and sophomore Clint Huntrods placed 10th (155-4) in the event. Brodersen is the second Hawkeye of the meet to win a Big Ten title as junior Adam Hamilton won the hammer throw Friday. It is the first time since 2002 that the Iowa men’s team has won two event titles at a Big Ten outdoor meet.

Winning preliminary events for Iowa were sophomore Meghan Armstrong (1,500 meters-4:26.85), junior Tiffany Johnson (100-meter hurdles-13.59) and the women’s 400-meter relay of Johnson, sophomores Kineke Alexander and Ashley Granger, and junior Peaches Roach (45.60).

Alexander, who won the 200 and 400 meters at the 2006 Big Ten Indoor Championships, advanced to Sunday’s finals in both events. Freshman David Chaplin advanced in the 100 and 200 meters, recording collegiate best marks of 10.59 and 21.15 in the prelims. Also advancing to Sunday’s event finals are junior Shannon Stanley (1,500 meters-4:31.41), Roach (200 meters-24.01) and the men’s 400-meter relay of sophomores Max Milder and Lee Elbert, Chaplin and junior David Pierre (41.04).

The Hawkeyes had four sophomores record top-10 placings Saturday’s event finals. Ryan Niver placed sixth in the decathlon (6,409 points), Tammilee Kerr placed sixth in the javelin (141-0) and Matty Gorman and Aaron Reed placed seventh (23-6 3/4) and 10th (22-9), respectively, in the long jump.

Sunday’s events start at 11:40 a.m. (ET). All events will be held at the Ralph Young Track and Field Facility on the Michigan State University campus.
