Haluska and Grajewski Earn Sportsmanship Award

June 7, 2006

PARK RIDGE, IL – The Big Ten Conference today recognized 22 student-athletes who were named Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners, a list that includes Iowa basketball player Adam Haluska and gymnast Liz Grajewski. These individuals were chosen from a group of 274 student-athletes honored throughout the academic year who had displayed positive sportsmanship.

Haluska is a native of Carroll, IA, who started all 34 games for the Hawkeyes a year ago. He averaged 13.9 points and 4.7 rebounds per game, shooting 41.7% from the field and a team best 84.8% from the free throw line. Haluska was named to the CoSIDA academic all-America third team and earned academic all-Big Ten honors for the second straight year. Haluska will be a senior in 2006-07.

Haluska was a third team all-Big Ten selection and was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) all-District second team. He was selected to all-tournament teams in both the Guardians Classic and the Hawkeye Challenge. Haluska was co-Big Ten Player of the Week after leading Iowa to back-to-back home wins over Indiana and Ohio State in late January.

Grajewski, a 2006 senior, was a second team all-conference honoree and named to the academic all-Big Ten team in 2006. The native of Covington, WA, placed sixth in the all-around at the Big Ten Championships and 11th at NCAA Regionals.

One member of each varsity sports team on every campus was chosen by the institution as a Sportsmanship Award honoree and from each university’s list, two Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners were then selected. All of the Sportsmanship Award honorees have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, theses student-athletes must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.

The 22 Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners include 19 Academic All-Big Ten honorees and eight All-Big Ten selections from the 2005-06 season. For their careers, the below honorees have collected Academic All-Big Ten honors on 49 occasions while gathering 12 All-Big Ten mentions.
