Four Hawkeyes Score in Exhibition Game

Aug. 19, 2006

IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa soccer team opened its 2006 season in convincing fashion, routing the Winona State Warriors 4-0 in an exhibition match at the Iowa Soccer Complex.

For the first 36 minutes of the game, the Iowa offense had a hard time getting the ball past Winona State’s defense. That is until freshman Alexandria Seydel scored her first goal as a Hawkeye, which gave Iowa a 1-0 lead going in to the second half.

In the second half, the Iowa offense was alive and well. Sophomore Stephanie Hyink snuck in a goal during the 72nd minute. Only two minutes later, freshman Kathleen Smokowski blasted one past the Winona goalkeeper. The final Iowa goal was scored in the 77th minute by sophomore Manon Engelhardt.

Two of the Hawkeye goalkeepers teamed-up to hold the Warriors scoreless. Senior Ali Becker and junior Lindsey Boldt each had a pair of saves.

Iowa will open the regular season next weekend in Columbia Mo. The Hawkeyes will take on Missouri Friday at 7 p.m., then will take on South Carolina Saturday at 11 a.m.
