A Winner!

Sept. 14, 2006

The nationally ranked Iowa Hawkeyes stood firm last Saturday in the Carrier Dome, holding Syracuse out of the end zone on nine consecutive plays from inside the five-yard line to secure a 20-13 double-overtime victory and run their record to a perfect 2-0 in 2006.

Wednesday night, the Hawkeyes learned that their fans and other college football fans appreciated their efforts by voting Coach Kirk Ferentz’s squad the winner of ESPN’s Pontiac Game Changing Performance.

The victory netted the general scholarship fund at the University of Iowa $5,000. The UI is also now eligible to win $100,000 in December when the nation votes on the Pontiac Game Changing Performance of the Year.

Iowa received more votes for its goal-line stand against the Orange than Tennessee for its efforts in the Vols’ victory over Air Force, Ohio State for its work at Texas, and Akron for its play in its upset victory at North Carolina State.

The Hawkeyes return to action Saturday when they entertain intrastate rival Iowa State at 11 a.m. before another sellout crowd – the 19th in a row – inside Kinnick Stadium. The game will be televised live by ESPN.
