IOWA CITY — It’s official. Iowa City and the University of Iowa and fans of the Iowa Hawkeyes across the state and the country, the ball is in your court.
ESPN GameDay – that happy-go-lucky troupe of college football fanatics who, arguably, have the job of all jobs – is coming to Iowa City next week for the game between the nationally ranked Iowa Hawkeyes and the top-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes. Game time Saturday at historic Kinnick Stadium is set for 7 p.m. ABC will handle the television coverage of the main event as part of its “Saturday Night Football” series.
Chris Fowler, Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit and Desmond Howard will be on the UI campus Friday and Saturday to handle all the pre-game fun and excitement and hype and analysis and color and pageantry and fun and analysis and excitement and more color and more pageantry and more hype and more analysis and more fun and more excitement…you get the point.

FRIDAY’S REPORT: HUBBARD ROCKS
A crowd estimated in excess of 5,000 gathered at Hubbard Park for the one-hour session of ESPN GameDay. “A record for Friday night going away,” said one ESPN staffer. “Take Texas, add USC, and you have half of what’s here. Based on this performance, tomorrow should be pretty interesting.” UI officials are preparing for a packed house. “It’s promises to be a great morning to be a Hawkeye,” said Rick Klatt, the UI’s associate athletics director for external affairs. |
And, listen up fans of the Hawkeyes, the challenge was laid at your feet last Thursday by the show’s host. “I am going to make this a little annual competition (which school’s fans are the best),” Chris Fowler wrote in his space on espn.com.
“There has been no standout yet. My sight-unseen nominee might be the group dressed in Black and Gold next week,” he hinted, adding, “if the Buckeyes arrive at Iowa ranked No. 1. That’d be a fun night in ol’ Iowa City.”

So, bring your flags. Bring your banners. Bring your posters. Have some fun. Have lots of fun. Be bold, wear gold. Be proud, get (really) loud.
ESPN GameDay – which is celebrating its 20th season in 2006 – will be live on the UI campus at Hubbard Park located immediately south of the Iowa Memorial Union and on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN News – and, probably, any and every other “ESPN” available – from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Friday.
On Saturday, Chris, Lee, Kirk and Desmond will take center stage on ESPN at 9 a.m. and will remain at the center of the college football universe until 11 a.m. The ESPN GameDay crew will also have a presence inside Kinnick beginning shortly after noon and periodically throughout the afternoon, through the game and until midnight-ish when the final curtain is drawn on the fifth week of the 2006 college football season.
Of course, there will be plenty of fun and excitement prior to each broadcast session.
Joining the fun on Saturday at Hubbard Park from noon until kickoff will be the ESPN GameDay radio show featuring Dave Revson, Gerry DiNardo and Todd McShay.
Additional activities are being planned for fans of the Hawkeyes on both Friday and Saturday. Those plans – when finalized – will be distributed to area media and by e-mail to all 2006 general public, UI faculty and staff, and UI student season ticket customers.
It has been almost a decade since ESPN GameDay last visited Iowa City. Fowler, Corso and the guys were here when the Hawkeyes and Buckeyes tangled during the 1996 season. It’s also been 14 years since Iowa played a true night game in Kinnick. The Hawkeyes and Miami Hurricanes played in 1992.
